How To Start Social Media Marketing In 2020 | THE BASICS

In this blog I’m going to cover the basics of how to get started with social media marketing in 2020 and tips and techniques you can use to help grow your brand.

The first thing to think about is what are you trying to achieve from social media marketing? It could be a whole range of different reasons from increasing brand awareness to generating new leads or building a community around your business, or all of them. Either way these tips can help assist you with them.

There are two different types of social media marketing, organic marketing which is everything you can do that is free and paid which I’m sure you can guess is ways in which you have to pay for.

Organic Ways

Posting regular content – Okay so first of all you need to be posting regular content across all the different social media platforms.

Think about the different forms of content you can create and go about this.

Videos and photos wether that be vlogs, fashion photos, interviews, product promo shoots, I don’t know that’s up to you and what your business is about.

You could also create pieces of audio content for example podcasts, audio notes, and music.

And lastly you can create written content for example articles, quotes, blogs, memes, stories etc.

When you have the content made you want to distribute these across all the different social media platforms such as, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok, LinkedIn, EVERYTHING don’t just do one do them all.

The most important things to do when posting content like this is number one make sure all the content is to the highest standard that you can possibly do and number two is consistency, make sure you are posting regular content day in and day out.

Interaction and engagement – Another great way to use social media marketing to reach new people and build an audience is interaction and engagement.

What I mean by that is replying to as many comments as you can on your content and engaging with people. This way you will build a great reputation. Also find like-minded people in the same field of work and start commenting, liking, and interacting on there content. At the end of the day is it called social media for a reason so be social.

Build genuine relationships with people because you never know who you might meet or who they might know and what could come from this. I have met some really cool people on social media that have gone on to really help me grow in my own ventures so trust me when I say this really does work.

Networking and collaboration – This is one of the quickest organic ways to help grow a bigger audience and get your business attention.

When I say networking I mean again finding people in the same area of work but this time instead of just commenting and interacting on their content actually reaching out to them personally and getting to know them. I don’t mean be a stalker and spam people but just drop them a line letting them know you like there work or a piece of content and to have a good day. They may ignore you or they may reply and check your work out finding that they like what you’re doing and there we go. What have you got to lose at the end of the day?

The reason I say collaboration is one of the quickest ways to grow your following is because by doing this you will be exposing yourself to a whole new audience in there’s and they will be exposing themselves to a whole new audience in yours. This is a great way for both parties to benefit.

Having said this you need to bare in mind that when finding people to collaborate with it needs to be beneficial for both. And what I mean by that is it’s no good if one of you has millions of followers and the other has hundreds because one is going to benefit substantially more. Make sure you are trying to collaborate with people on a similar sort of level to yourself because this way they are likely to be more interested and willing.

Paid Ways

Social media ads – These are a great way of allowing you to amplify reach, enhance targeting and drive greater results.

Paying for ads across the variety of different social media platforms I would argue is one of the best ways to reach new people. What makes social ads so great is the ability to not only reach new people but target people that are interested in your field, for example me running a fitness brand I can target people that are interested in fitness, Nike, Adidas, and so on. Also what makes them great is you can target gender and age so if your a menswear brand looking to target 18-30 year old men then you can do just that. The last thing that makes them so good is the budget is down to you… You can spend whatever you want over however long of a time period you want. Obviously the more you spend the more you should get back from it.

Influencer marketing – Another great way to get your brand known and quickly.

So the idea is quite simple. You pay influencers meaning individuals who have a dedicated social following and are viewed as experts within their niche to endorse and mention your products too there audience and in return hopefully send lots of traffic and sales over to your business. Influencer marketing works because of the high amount of trust that influencers have build up with there following and recommendations from them serve as a form of trust to your brand’s potential customer.

Whereas with the big influencers you are going to have to pay them, another great way is gifting the smaller influencers. You can send influencers that have an audience between 10k-100k free stuff in the hope they do the same thing and share your products too there audience. Although this may not gain as much traction for your brand as paying influencers with big audiences, a lot of brands are doing this because it’s cheaper and they can gift say ten small influencers to get the same reach if not more than paying one big influencer.

Affiliate programs – Simply put, an affiliate program is an agreement in which a business pays another business or influencer a commission for sending traffic and/or sales their way. The affiliate gets a unique link, the affiliate link from which clicks can be tracked.

Okay so if there are social media influencers in your industry who have a substantial audience and good engagement with there audience you could partner with them. For instance, again in my case if you sell fitness wear it might be a good idea to reach out to influencers in that field and ask if they’d feature your products. Ideally this would result in there following to click the affiliate link finding they like what you sell and purchasing something from your business and you would give the influencer a commission of the sale for driving the person there.
